What's frightening is that many, like American Spirit (sic<k>), are not stupid. Their indoctrination has been such that they actually believe moral intuition can supplant the cold realities of economics. Re the FDA, several years ago a think tank (REASON FOUNDATION?) listed that agency as something like the fifth or sixth leading cause of premature death in the USA. Regression studies indicate their delay in allowing aspirin manufacturers to advertise the heart benefits associated with regular use alone knocked off several hundred thousand ahead of their time. Milton Friedman would abolish that agency, and no serious economist would support it in present form. How likely is it that the morally diseased will even investigate that sort of argument?
