What would be the Horrible side effects of giving all children the same opportunity in life?

Can you suggest with any precision how to accomplish that goal? Can you predict any subsequent "invisible foot" effects of your suggestions?

I'm a gazillionaire and you're a poor casual day laborer. My kids go to the best private schools; if they have problems in school, they will get excellent private tutoring. They will go to the best private universities; if there's a problem, I will either use my influence or make a large donation to the school to straighten it out.

When my kids are growing up, they will absorb the attitudes and mannerisms of the rich and will fit in easily with them the rest of their lives.

When my kids graduate, I will set them in whatever business or profession they have chosen.

My kids vacation in Europe, or wherever they want; they get the benefit of contact with diverse cultures. Yours don't know what the word "vacation" means; you live day-to-day and hand-to-mouth and have never taken one.

How do you propose to overcome the advantages I can give my kids? Tax away all my wealth and redistribute it? Pass a law banning me from spending any money not provided by the state on my kids? Ban private schools? (I'm sure you would not approve of vouchers so that some of the less well-to-do kids could get into some private schools.)

I've presented my arguments. How do you propose to overcome the "discrimination" that results from poverty and wealth?

Sounds like you might like to live in Russia where the same ideas were tried. Maybe you would prefer China. In those places all shared poverty equally except for the ruling elite. In this country the poor eat more meat than the rich of the above. In this country the poor have more living quarters including running water. In Russia only the super rich had running water. By the way in the Kansas City school system the children were given the most expensive school system in the nation and their grades didn't improve 1 bit.

Another interesting thing to understand is that the advent of capitalism ushered in a prosperity to the world that was unprecedented. It improved the lot of life for a vast majority of people. Communism came about when a group of thinkers observed that although capitalism had improved life for the majority that a minority of people missed out on that improvement. They then created communism which they believed would make all prosperous. Guess what they failed.
Bottom line is I can grow a tree and from it enjoy the fruit that it produces. So can you. The role of government is not to ensure that you should eat the fruit of my tree but to make sure that I don't prevent you from growing a tree. Very simple.
