Arris has sold 1,000,000 voice ports. T has installed 400,000. So there is a possibility that it's just a matter of T ordering too many and have to use them up before re-ordering. Actually, there is no indication that T is getting ready to fall on the proverbial sword. And T has spun this latest upset on "managing our budget". In reality, what they have a lot of difficulty with is forecasting their needs and managing their inventories. Their "budget" is secondary in this matter. What they did was finally got around to counting how many HDTs and Voice Ports they had in their warehouses and decided they had a lot more than they were aware of, so they put a hold on shipments until next year. The spigot will get turned on full force in January as they work through their "new found" equipment. They simply just did not know how much they had in stock. A few years ago, ANTEC did manage their MSCs (Material Service Centers) for a nominal fee per year. None of these year end inventory discoveries and shipment holds occurred. In the interim, they decided to move their supply management to an Oracle database. You now see the results of that cost saving move. Yes, a large percentage of ANTC revenues are dependent on T today. However, it is recognized that diversification is critical to future success. The new Arris International is one aspect of this move to diversification where they will pick up the ex-Nortel accounts (telco accounts, international, overbuilders, etc.) in addition to the progress being made with Adelphia and others on IP Telephony applications. This is true carrier-grade, mass deployable IP Telephony. There are also many non-AT&T customers who are in the process of installing circuit-switched telephony now and 1Q2001 with the prospect of migrating their service to IP Telephony when the technology is mature, using their installed base of HDTs.
