Nothing faster. Compaq - 700MHz Duron (CD), 700MHz Celeron (CD + CDRW), 900MHz Athlon (CD + CDRW), 850MHz PIII (DVD + CDRW), 1GHz Athlon (DVD + CDRW). So the Celeron and PIII systems were positioned above the Duron and AThlon system and the 1GHz Athlon was at the top. No other GHz systems in the store. Micon - Celeron 700, Duron 700. I didn't see the AThlon labeled system on the floor, but they had a large desktop on the shelf that was either a PIII or AThlon... I asked a salesman about the P4 and he said they got them in but they had to send them back because they were defective. I didn't ask which OEM system it was. He said it might take at least two weeks to get them back, but you could get one now with build to order. CompUSA Laptops - At least 25 laptops, 2 550MHz K6-2+s, rest Intel. Funny thing about the two K6-2+ laptops (Sony and HP) is that according to the system properties the processor was a K6-III ! I looked through the Sony system and couldn't find any trace of PowerNow!. HP desktops - from lowest to highest - couple of Celerons, 850MHz PIII, 900MHz Athlon and PIII (at the SAME price, only difference is Athlon system had 5GB larger HD), 933MHz PIII, 1GHz Athlon. The 1GHz Athlon cost $50 more than the 933MHz PIII and both had the same config. Compaq - 700MHz Duron (CD), 750 or 700MHz (forgot which) Duron (CD + CDRW), 900MHz Athlon, 850MHz PIII, 1GHz Athlon. Basically same as Best Buy, PIII above Athlon, but a Duron system replacing a Celeron system. Sony - 866MHz and slower PIIIs. Couldn't find the 1GHz one. The Sony systems had Sun's Star Office instead of Microsoft's office... P4 - Just happened to walk by as the guys opened up the HP P4 display system they had. The heatsink is HUUUUUUUGE! Now that I have seen it I realize why Intel is mounting it to the case. Had two sticks of DRDRAM in it... Asked guy if systems got called back. He said the Compaq P4 systems had to be sent back, they wouldn't even BOOT! He said the HP systems would boot, but either hung or had problems. Since they were HP certified they were allowed to apply the patch to the systems themselves. I asked if he would recommend this P4 system over an Athlon and he said he would choose the 1.2GHz Athlon with "the new chipset, 760". He had seen benchmarks comparing the AThlon to the P4. But he didn't know when systems with the AThlon and DDR would make it to the store... To summarize, Compaq is positioning the 50MHz faster AThlon BELOW the 850MHz PIII in the midrange (by using larger HD and a DVD in the PIII vs. CD in Athlon) and Duron is about to replace Celeron system. 1GHz Athlon is fastest PC, except for the P4 which has been recalled from Best Buy, but available from CompUSA. At CompUSA HP is basically letting customer choose btwn Athlon and PIII. One more thing, the ALL HP and Compaq Intel systems except the 900 and 933MHz PIII were using the internal video card integrated in the chipset. ALL Athlon systems had some an nvidia TNT or TNT2 video card.
