Sam P... "The added intimidation of paid ouside agitators was likely to have been a contributing factor as noted by one on the board... "

We all know that this is the excuse they will use. I haven't seen any reliable links that refer to "paid outside agitators". Even if there are, isn't that the AMERICAN WAY? Unions have been doing it for years. Why should this be any different (if it's true)?

Hi Sam P.; Re the Dade recount...

The real issue in Dade is the Buchannan vote, not the punch card chad. The thing to remember is that the objective (on both parties side) is not to get an accurate vote, but instead to get their candidate into office. That is why Gore had the votes manually recounted in the counties that he won big in, not the ones that Bush one. The normal result of a recount is a higher margin of victory to the previous winner, not a reversal, so Gore is likely to pick up votes in those counties. Of course, if the hand recounts are allowed, the Republicans are probably going to ask for hand recounts in the Republican counties as well.

But Dade county was not the big place where Gore was likely to pick up votes. Remember, if the county is evenly split, the effect of a recount is just to give approximately equal votes to the two candidates. Given that, the number you have to look at is not, the Gore vote in the county, but instead, the difference between the Gore vote and the Bush vote. Here's the (approximate) numbers:

Gore's margin of victory in the recount counties:

Dade: 39,000
Broward: 210,000
Palm Beach: 117,000
Total: 366,000

Of the three counties, Dade is only about 11% of the total. It is likely that Broward is big enough just by itself, Dade was never needed, and was included only to give a margin of victory. Consequently, the Democrats can safely let the Dade recount stop, and at the same time, falsely accuse mainstream Republicans of using strong arm tactics.
