wiz, gen'lizations are very powerful. they are, in fact, the basis for much of the bigotry throughout history. irish are... blacks are... whites are... jews are... women are... men are... arabs are... generalization are for the intellectually lazy. seriously. i can't handle the inherent complexities of the real world so i'm going to stuff them into 4 buckets of my own making. hr depts love this sort of crap. put everyone in a box and you know enough about them to make a decision. and you do. too bad most of the time it is a wrong decision. -ng- the gurus that sell books on how to manipulate others (they don't use this term b/c they are trying to manipulate their readers) want to lump everyone in 4 neat boxes so you best know how to pull their strings. heck, even astrologers have 12 buckets - one for each month. i see the negative impact of generalizations daily. generalizations make it easier to have a conversation, for sure. most folks aren't savvy enough to know that you can't extrapolate the generalization to specific instances with certainty. not at all.
