Libyan official reacts to US decision to extend travel ban
Text of report by London-based newspaper 'Al-Sharq al-Awsat', in Arabic 26 Nov

Speaking to `Al-Sharq al-Awsat` on the phone from Tripoli yesterday, a prominent Libyan official said that the US decision to extend for another year the ban on US nationals travelling to Libya "reflects the continuation of the feeling of hostility and the grudge that the US administration harbours against Libya", adding that Libya's streets are safer than streets in the USA.

The official - who asked not to be named - rejected the excuses that US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright tried to put forward to justify the decision. He said that "Libya's streets are 10 times safer than those of the US capital Washington itself." He said that, over the past few years, the Libyan security services did not register a single instance in which the lives of US or European nationals were exposed to danger in Libya. He added that US interests are "the only loser as a result of this decision".
