I agree with much of what you have said. I am not sure how much truth there is to the story that Richard M. Nixon did not choose to contest the Cook County election results due to the potential of besmirching the reputation of the Presidency and the world's leading democracy (back in 1960). Naturally he may not have wanted various Republican strongholds contested. Nevertheless, the bickering was held to a relative minimum, in spite of the fact that there were parties that felt injured.

As with any complex system, elections are imperfect. The will of the people is clearly split between Gore & Bush. Neither is or will be a clear "winner" regardless of any Supreme Court of other decisions.

In some ways this may be a turning point in American politics. Since we will learn from the experience:

1. The republic will continue.
2. There is excessive power and influence in Washington that does not fully take into account the ever changing interests of the American people.
3. We will find that the economy does not implode.
4. We will find that the "system" works as imperfect as it is. This democracy.
5. Election reform should take place so as to avoid this type of situation.

Perhaps this will result in greater transparency and an appreciation that the last bastion of a highly Centralized/Bureaucratized process is in our government. This institution should not be immune to the same forces that have reshaped American industry and other institutions. Forces which have lead to greater wealth, transparency and efficiency.

u may b right. gop had to let gore steal the election or try to prevent him from stealing it. after clinton lied delayed attacked, destroyed people, gop had had enough and wouldn't stand idly by while dems manufactured votes for gore.
