To: Sully- who wrote (19473 ) 11/26/2000 5:23:52 AM From: elpolvo Respond to of 65232 uhh Ö¿Ö ? you give me a homemade webpage that has this as its final conclusion?:As predicted, Albert Gore, Jr. plans to be president, at any cost, regardless of the law or the Constitution. i don't think that counts as a credible unbiased source. what is Florida Stat. ß102(2) ?? is that a state statute? or county ordinance? does it apply to PB county election boards? what is an election board? are they the vote counters or a canvassing board? in my county the voting process is administered by the election BUREAU which is under supervision of the county clerk. i know these boards and these ordinances vary from state to state and from county to county. that's why i ask. i'd like to see national elections governed by standardized federal statutes, wouldn't you? you mention the makeup of the canvassing board officials ...in my county the canvassing board is made up of the members of the county commission who have nothing to do with the actual counting of votes. their job is to meet as a board of canvass and to certify the results at which point the unofficial tally becomes official. there were difficulties here on election night. one of the computer programs that reads absentee and early vote tallies was improperly programmed and would not read the paper ballots. that took a couple days to get resolved and get those votes tallied. meanwhile some of those ballots were misplaced but later found. the election day polling locations use electronic voting machines and the cartridges from those machines are read by computers and transmitted via modem to election central headquarters in government center. a couple of the precinct captains (temporary pollworker employees hired only for elections) mistakenly took the cartridges home instead of having them read and transmitted on election night which caused more confusion and delay. eventually, all votes were counted, including some of the absentee and early vote paper ballots that had to be hand counted because of damage that made them unreadable by the counting machines (computers). the statewide vote was so close that the lead changed hands two or three times in the week following the election as the few remaining unread and missing votes were located, read and tallied. the final swing back to gore was ascertained when a mistake was discovered in the non-electronic tally of dona anna county (las cruces). a 500 vote error in addition was discovered. the tally sheet was photocopied and published in the newspapers, clearly showing the error. had this election not been so close, all of these small errors would not have affected the outcome. i saw no evidence, nor were there claims of any fraud or cheating. i suspect that there are similar errors in every election. cest la vie. because of my position in county government as a producer/director of government television for the past eleven years, i know everyone on the county commission, board of canvass, the county clerk, the elections bureau manager, and the people in the information technology division that collected the votes in my county. i know them personally, i know them better than i know you, and i can tell you without doubt that even though i might not agree with all of their political views, every one of them are decent, serious, public servants (republicans and democrats alike) and though they may make errors, they simply would NOT CHEAT in tallying the public vote for president of the united states. their jobs, their lives, their families, and their fellow citizens depend on them. before i knew these people personally it was much easier for me to imagine scenarios of cheating and corruption. i do see partisanship, favoritism, and political deal-making and that is what politics is about, but... cheating in election tallies? no way, jose. we've got a good system here with some responsible people working for us and i'm proud to be a part of it by pointing tv cameras at these people for citizens to watch as they do their jobs. would you like a tv camera on you everyday as you do yours? how does this relate to florida? i'm not sure. i suspect that the situation is similar. i suspect that people who do not know the election officials personally, find it easy to imagine scenarios of cheating and corruption in ballot counting. i also suspect that their suspicions and fears of corruption are suspect. yer fren, -polvie
