The stink from the Democratic Party’s actions in stripping military personnel of their votes is getting worse by the day. The Defense Department has confirmed that several thousand overseas military votes posted by Naval personal did not arrive in the country until last Wednesday, perhaps making it too late for many of them to have been included in the final tally. This is because the ballots remained on the ships for several days after the election

Two questions have now been raised: As Florida’s Supreme Court has circumvented the law to try and provide Gore with the extra votes he needs to win the election, a precedent has clearly been set that would justify the counting of these military votes. There is no doubt that they were filled in on time and this should count as “mitigating” circumstances.

But though the idea has been advanced in private that these votes should now be included, personnel from the Gore campaign have vigorously opposed the idea, arguing that the circumstances are different from those that prevaild in Palm Beach County. This was not disputed nor was the fact that the fundamental point of disagreement centered on the Democrats evident fear that such a move would probably enhance the Bush vote and so further imperil Gore’s chances of victory.

The second question concerns the reasons for the delay. Pentagon officials argued that the terrorist attack on the USS Cole plus the necessity of trying to prevent a destroyer from sinking caused the delay. (Some officials considered that these facts alone should have counted as mitigating circumstances).

But some have privately raised doubts that the circumstances of the USS Cole accounted for the lengthy delay. It is being mooted that the delay was deliberate and ordered from Washington. The finger is being pointed at Clinton appointees, many of whom are known to detest all branches of the military.

These suspicions have been fuelled by several apparently curious incidences that some officials feel should be investigated. It has not been forgotten that last year the Clinton-Gore administration issued an order, in direct defiance of more than 100 years of tradition, to all military commanders instructing them to prevent voting on election day taking place on any Department of Defense facility. When commanders requested a reason they were told the directive was issued to prevent the military authority from intimidating voters (sic).

It was patently obvious to the military that the true aim of the Clinton order was to make it more difficult for military personnel to vote because they tended to support the Republicans. With this incident still burning away in the military combined with the Democrats attack on the military vote in Florida, it is no wonder that many are now beginning to speculate on just how far Clinton and Gore would go in sabotaging the military vote
