With Gilder's picks, you have to add your own Due Diligence. He focuses on technology (ascendant). You have to go a bit further than that by yourself. E.g. He recomended Agilent (because of its optics business). However, do you really want to buy Agilent for all the other business (slow growing ones that it owns)?. Also, consider STOR. Why buy this stock when the lockup is not over yet.. Hence, I stayed away from the above and many others. On the other hand AVNEX is a pure play, focused product, no extra baggage, growing etc. Picked it up... Add your own due diligence to cover Gilder's research. I owned uniphase before it was JDSU. At, that time Gilder was not so famous, but his research and views added value to my decision. Currently, I am focused on AMCC,AVNX,JDSU, etc, and bought SCMR contrary to Gilders opinion. Avanex, the story is just begining. Use gilder as an early way to spot trends, names, because given his visibility he has more accessiblity to research/interviews/site research. All, this is worth the subscription he charges. I have ignored his call to GBLX, NOPT, MFNX, etc simply because, the gross margins was'nt there. Good luck. My second biggest holding is avanex.
