Holidays Push PC Sales to Exceed Last Winter's Highest Level
November 27, 2000 (TOKYO) -- In the first week of November (Oct. 30-Nov. 5) sales of PCs in Japan increased 19.1 percent in units and 18.7 percent in value, as compared with a week earlier.

In comparison with the same week last year (Nov. 1-Nov. 7, 1999), the sales rose 50.1 percent in units and 36.6 percent in value, according to a survey conducted by GfK Japan Ltd. Nikkei Market Access compiles the data.

GfK Japan is an information service company dealing with POS data collected from 3,200 volume retailers of household electric appliances.

The average PC retail price decreased 676 yen, from 186,121 yen in the previous week, to 185,445 yen. (110.25 yen = US$1)

PC sales of volume retailers of household electric appliances greatly increased due to three consecutive holidays, including the Japanese national holiday of "Culture Day" on Nov. 3. The sales rose 19.1 percent from the previous week, following the fifth week of October, when PC sales increased 13.6 percent as compared with a week earlier. The sales increased more than 50 percent, as compared with the same week last year.

Notably, PC sales in the first week of November exceeded last year's highest level, recorded in the second week of December 1999. Last year's highest level was achieved immediately after company employees and pubic workers got winter bonuses. Because PC sales exceeded last year's highest level even before bonuses are paid this year, the winter business season has made a good start this year.
