Jay, what is your opinion of the Marcos "Black Eagle" gold shipments of the 1970's and 1980's? As you probably know the legal wrangling is still going on in Manila and elsewhere and the case for the 1200 or so tons claimed to be in a Swiss bonded warehouse is backed up by enormous "eye-witness" testimony from Marcos era military officers and others. The Swiss banks have acted peculiar in this whole business. You know that for years they denied having ANY Marcos assets and then after the class action case was won in US courts by the 10,000 martial law victims they then revealed the $500 million that is now in escrow and being claimed by several claimants, including the Philippine government. I have friends over there who know a little about this business and it has been covered extensively by the press in the Philippines, but very little coverage in the US. Your thoughts? WSR

What do you think of oil producers as defensive stocks?

I own numerous plays in oil and natural gas. Most recently I have been buying calls on OXY, Occidental Petroleum, because their P/E is below 5 and --among other things-- in 1998 they bought the United States petroleum reserve properties at Elk Hills, California, from which they can deliver natural gas directly into the Californis market. In that energy-starved state, natural gas is being quoted at over $17 as opposed to about $6.50 elsewhere. OXY's next earnings report--and earnings are already healthy--could show an even bigger jump. Here are some relevant URLs:
