Earnings growth forecasts were way too optimistic in the first place. What you are seeing is a marked lowering of expectactions. Unemployment claims should be allowed to climb, the labor markets are way too tight, which can lead to wage-pull inflation. The unemployment rate is still very very low, relatively speaking.

People have/had come to believe that this boom cycle is indestructable, and this belief is very dangerous. The markets need to be scared every so often to give people a reality check and knock a bit of that invincible feeling out of our sails. Unfortunate, but true.
