tips, tips, whose got the tips....

"How to modify your Win9x machine's File
System settings to make your system a
touch faster:

1.Right click on My Computer.

2.Select Properties.

3.Select the Performance tab.

4.Select the File System button.

5.In the Settings portion of the Hard Disk tab, next to "Typical
role of this computer", Win 9x defaults to Desktop Computer
(Win 9x's normal desktop setting).

6.Select Network server.

While you're in there, make certain the Read-ahead optimization bar
is pulled all the way to the right (full) for best performance. Then
restart your system.

Setting a machine to be a network server instead of a desktop
system tells the machine to use more RAM to cache files. With the
File System set to Desktop Computer, VFAT allocates 10K of
memory for the 32 most recently accessed folders and the 677 most
recently accessed files.

But, when you use the Network Server setting, VFAT allocates
approximately 40K of memory to record the 64 most recently
accessed folders and the 2729 most recently accessed files. The
additional 30K of memory makes a difference.

We're not sure if it benchmarks faster, but it sure feels a snip faster
on machines with lots of memory (64 to 128 MB). We've yet to see
a downside to this change."
