If all depends on getting the "right" candidate, then all is lost.

With the right candidate, I think it would work. But probably wishful thinking, the powers that be are likely too entrenched.

So far, the major parties have successfully played to the center. I see no reason they cannot continue to do so. The center, almost by definition, will not align with a dissident movement.
