He didn't go into office with an enormous personal fortune -( 1-1.5 million net worth according to estimates ). Plus he didn't spend a dime of his own money in the election.

The point is he is building his fortune while in office.

As an indication of where his priorities lie, the very first issue he fought for as Gov was that the first lady should be paid a salary. He threatened that if she didn't get paid for her services, she wouldn't move into the Gov Mansion and he would hire a professional hostess to handle the traditional First Lady duties. He lost that battle.

You don't need to take my word for it. All this is easily verifiable.

However, I could argue that today, the personal fortune is almost a prerequisite to high forms of public service.
