I was very interested to see this news posted about Applied Materials plans to rule the ion implant market. I was not aware that Eaton/Axcelis had rolled over and allowed AMAT to make all the money in this segment. Eaton is a conglomerate and not a lot of people think about them when it comes to semi equipment, and they have long ruled the roost in the implant market. They make all kind of stuff like truck axles and hydraulic gear, and their ion implant gear is seen by some as a peculiar fit in their company. Indeed, Eaton spun off an IPO for their semi-equip gear into a company called Axcelis in April 2000, and Eaton shareholders will receive the remainder as a stock dividend as of late Dec.

So as of December 29, 2000 Axcelis will be an independent entity with about an $800 million market cap. What I am wondering will, AMAT make a play for Axcelis, or do they intend to go head to head against them. The tone of the press release suggests to me that they intend to compete rather than aquire. Anyone else have an opinion? Also, I cannot rememer the size of AMAT's last aquistions, which I think were Opal and Orbot. Were they on the order of a better part of 1 billion dollars?
