It is with the utmost of sincerity and relief that I know (or think I know) we will not be subjected to "Uncle Al Explains It All." The cocked head, the pregnant pause, the condescending slow-down-of-pro-nouncing-each-and-every-word-as-if-we-all-had-a-room-temperature-i.q.-like-those-homeless-voters-in-Wisconsin-who-got-cig-a-rettes-for-voting-for-Al. More painful than watching Mister Rogers reruns with my nephews. Ouch. Now, admittedly, GW had a little bit of the "deer in the headlights" aspect to his speech last night, but we know he's not a great public speaker. As he relaxes into the job, though, he will improve. Al, on the other hand, will only get worse. I literally squirmed in my chair as Gore went through his shtick. And that "conference call" was a hoot--where did they get those 1960's phones--it looked like a broadway play. Yo, Internet Al, ever heard of speaker phones?? The best of all was Cheney, all business with that stent in his artery. There was a moment, almost a defining moment, I thought, where he was asked what he thought of the Vice Prez's continued litigation. Nothing he said was terrifically important, but the gist of his commentary and body language was: we cannot control what kind of annoyance Gore and Lieberman choose to be in the coming weeks, but we are getting on with the transition to a new administration. That was all that was needed to define their new roles--the Republicans setting up camp, chopping wood, putting up tents and starting the cookstoves. Ah, wilderness. And the Democrats, mosquitoes continuing to bite. Yes, it's an annoyance, but only that. Just my two non-partisan cents on this whole thing.
