Similar ballots yielded several hundred newfound votes for Gore in Broward County when they were reviewed by hand. Some Democrats believe Miami-Dade…which halted its manual recount last week because officials said they couldn't finish it by yesterday's 5 p.m. deadline…could prove a treasure trove of previously undetected votes. Bush's certified lead is 537 votes. Circuit Court Judge Sanders Sauls in Tallahassee was assigned the Gore case. Gore aides arranged today's conference phone call to make a display of Democratic solidarity. Speaking to Gore from Tallahassee were House Democratic Leader Richard Gephardt (D-Mo.) and Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle (D-S.D.) Gephardt told Gore and his running mate Joseph I. Lieberman that House Democrats "continue to be entirely supportive of going ahead with this contest. . . . Our members feel very strongly that we need to have a fair and accurate count." Daschle said, "We were just given a new tally this morning that, if we counted all of "the votes that have already been counted in some of the recounts, we'd actually be ahead by maybe nine votes." He didn't give details of his calculation. Gore replied: "This really is about much more than which candidate wins and which candidate loses. It is about the integrity of our system of government. That integrity can only be assured if every vote that is legally cast is actually counted, according to the law." Gore's lead attorney, David Boies, said a key argument in court will focus on Miami-Dade's punch card ballots. Boies told NBC's "Today" show, "there are over 10,000 ballots that have never been counted once for the presidency," referring to Miami-Dade ballots that registered no presidential choice.
