I agree that the system is flawed. I also agree that there is no agreement on what counts as a vote. What happened was - if I make an analogy... the kids (Bush and Gore) can not agree and rather than attempting to agree on some ground rules and settle these issues like adults they are going to mom and dad (the Judicial system) to have them settle it. When the Florida Supreme court ruled against Bush he said that "Dad doesn't know what he's talking about"... he can't tell me what to do.

The point: If Bush and Gore, knowing that the election was close, agreed on a full state wide recount and worked on a consistent set of measurements to begin with this would all be worked out and we would know. I know this is a ridiculous vision, but it would be great if that could have been done. But, from Bush's perspective - "why do that when I'm already ahead?" "Let the vote counting and verification stop now!"
