I have a theory as to the reason for the rabid attacks by the right - and I am not referring merely to the mod-porch - but more in the way of a generalized comment.

I think that it was an evolution that occurred with the Vietnam protest movement and Watergate and the Nixon resignation caused things to come to a head. We then saw the the equivalent of the Republican Hezbollah who were until then a fringe element become more broad-based movement using issues ranging from abortion rights, affirmative action and the perceived widespread abuse of the welfare system give that movement added steam. Clinton winning the presidency was for them the last straw - and his effortless finessing of every move that they made drove the Republicans nuts. Their mission in life seems to be to regain the White House through any means that they can get away with - and defeating Gore who is a proxy for Clinton in their eyes would be the equivalent of finally defeating Clinton. The antipathy that the Republicans have to anything even remotely linked to Clinton reminds me of the aversion that the liberals had to Nixon.
