RE: compiler automatic use of SSE2 Steve, I agree completely. But today's compilers are not to that point yet. I believe there is plenty of opportunity for compilers to use MMX, 3Dnow! and SSE2 automatically as well. Compiler performance seems to be doubling every 30 years or so. The problem is that so few are sold that it is hard to justify a large development investment. Borland and Watcom had much better code generation than Microsoft for many years and look where they are. Fortunately Intel now offers a compiler that while not ideal, frees a programmer from some of the tedious aspects of assembly language coding.
