firstly, the entire commercial position is in excess of 700k contracts (long and short). the netted figure is only of interest from a contrarian perspective inasmuch as it indicates the speculators being net long by 80k contracts.
the commercial gross short position alone amounts to 376,000 contracts. covering a few in order to sell some index heavies into the ensuing buy programs is probably no big affair. likewise to re-establish short positions once the small traders hop aboard is presumably also easy. the dipsters are well trained after all. btw, i have heard that the commercials in question are mainly foreign entities. not sure yet how to interpret that however.
