Okay this is very complicated..when our country was founded, I really don't think our government trusted the people to elect the President, so they gave each state so many votes {electors} according to their population. This way the huge states wouldn't have complete control of the Presidency.

It is up to the electors to cast their vote, and usually they cast their vote according to the vote of the people, but they do not have to vote that way.

The reason the candidates go after Calif., Ny, Tx, etc is because they have a huge electorial vote.

I don't know if you've seen the map of the counties that voted for Bush, but it was almost the whole country, but because the large cities are mostly democrats, they control the electorial votes for states like Michigan.

Very confusing, but I will see if I can find something that explains it a little clearer than I have.
