Remember the public put the Democrats there. The public should be held responsible for in the end. The buck stops with the public - not with the President, not with the Senate and not with the House.

You put me in a very difficult position for invoking Nixon. He has a high standing with me regardless of Watergate, regardless of the kind of languages he used (semi-)privately. I would venture to say that he held back from that contest because of reasons other than just doing good for the country. (But, I only learned that indirectly. I've not done any homework myself on the matter.)

Hypothetically, say Bush finally got sworn in and drank his way to hell and jeopadized the country, I would not hold him ultimately responsible. The public (even though less than 50% of the popular vote) should be held responsible for that. No one forced us to vote down that middle. As a whole, we waiver and some times what we toss comes up the wrong way!
