Oddsmakers can't pay on election bets

Tuesday, November 28, 2000

Knight Ridder Newspapers

MIAMI -- Think the presidential election impasse is giving you fits? Be thankful you're not Haden
Ware, oddsmaker for World Sports Exchange, an offshore Internet gambling site in Antigua.

He's sitting on $500,000 in presidential election bets put down as long as two years ago, mostly
by U.S. gamblers. And he doesn't dare pay it out.

"People are furious their money is tied up,'' Ware says. "People who bet on Bush were calling
Sunday when Florida certified its votes for Bush wanting their money. I had to tell them, 'That's
not it. I'm waiting until Al Gore makes that concession speech.' ''
