OT - Some have said it cost Bush 10,000 votes. There's as much supportable evidence for that postulate as there is for an (at least) equivalent Gore vote loss due to the shenanigans by the Bush operatives blessing the ballots in Seminole County. In any event, Bush ought not to complain about the networks much: it is precisely because of the perception generated by the networks' premature call of a Bush victory that his camp is able to continue with the (false) mantle of victory. Bush ought to give a couple ambassadorships to Network brass - he owes them everything.

The (wrong) call on Florida-for-Gore came 8 minutes before the polls closed in Northwest Florida. No one about to walk out the door stopped and said 'to hell with it.' Moreover, under Florida law TV sets and radios are not allowed near polls so it is unlikely any late voters heard the call - and car radios carry nothing but bible-thumping holy rollers and re-broadcasts of Paul Harvey when he was young and Ike was president. Even if someone living close enough to a polling place somehow heard the call, to vote for Bush in Northwest Florida all they had to do was pick up a ballot from the GOP the next day, misdate it, mail it in, and it was counted on the assumption it came from someone in the military.
