Numerous studies on this topic have already been released, and others are still underway. To date, scientific data indicate that there is no clear linkage between wireless phones and adverse health effects. Additionally, questions have been raised about whether RF emissions are lower or higher when a headset is used with a wireless phone. Studies done by Plantronics and governmental health regulatory agencies, including the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the UK Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), show that RF emissions absorbed at the head are significantly lower when a headset is used with a wireless phone. In fact, the FDA recommends hands-free devices as an option for people concerned about the potential health risks from RF emissions. A DTI report published in May 2000 concluded that: "Personal hands-free kits offer very substantial reductions in SAR (Specific Absorption Rate) compared to the normal use of a mobile phone held against the ear." SAR is the internationally accepted standard for measuring radio frequency absorption by human tissue. UK Minister Patricia Hewitt said the DTI research backed previous studies that hands-free devices for mobile phones could cut exposure to radiation. What are the standards for RF emissions? The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has issued exposure limit guidelines for all wireless phone transmissions, which, based on the scientific evidence presently available, incorporate significant margins of safety to ensure the health of the general public. All wireless phones sold in the United States must comply with the FCC's standard of a SAR reading of 1.6 or less. What is the SAR of a Plantronics headset used with a wireless phone? Plantronics has commissioned an independent study from Aprel Laboratories to test the SAR of Plantronics mobile headsets. The Aprel study conclusively showed that Plantronics headsets reduce SAR levels to virtually zero. We've included a summary of the Aprel report as a .pdf file. It can be viewed online or downloaded by clicking here. Plantronics will continue to work closely with regulatory agencies and the wireless industry to further ensure consumer safety and to address concerns that might arise about the use of cellular products.
