The makeup of the present US Supreme Court is very different from the old days of the Warren Court. That was a very activist court. This court believes in judicial restraint. That's why it is more likely than you probably realize that the US Supreme Court could overrule the Florida Supreme Court's extension of the deadline.

However, I see that Bush is offering to withdraw the appeal, which indicates to me that he thinks that he has little to gain either way, and with this I agree.

Just having the US Supreme Court grant the petion for a writ of certiorari was probably enough to freeze the Florida Supreme Court in its tracks.
