Intcfan, you make some very valid points especially regarding the role of the religious right.

Some of the labels that the right-wingers use are simplistic beyond belief; for example the notion that the Republicans are pro-family implies that the Democrats are not!

I always found a certain irony to Reagan espousing the pro-family agenda even as his family was quite dysfunctional. I recall Quayle being interviewed regarding abortion rights and he was asked what he would do if his daughter was raped and became pregnant and sought an abortion. He said that would be her choice; whereupon his wife who was also present instantly said that there would be no abortion and that their daughter would have the child! Of course, the daughter's opinion was not sought!

During the vice presidential debate, Cheney was quite understanding about gay rights; it came out in one of the Sunday news programs that one of his daughter's is rumored to be gay and that could explain his compassion. A pity that it takes a personal experience before a certain measure of tolerance can be shown.
