Bux,

<< Your other hope that they will use the MSP1000 is trickier. I wonder if it has adequate processing power, etc, to be used with a Palm OS device and how it compares to the MOT processor that goes into the Palm Vx? >>

Ya done burst my bubble <g> ... but your right ... unlikely there would be a port of the 3.5 OS to the MSP1000.

<< Qualcomm claims the "MSP1000 chipset supports the most popular third-party operating systems" which would seem to include Palm OS but they don't name it and they don't make any claims that it is more powerful than other solutions. Of course battery life and low-cost is more important than pure power in a handset application. Maybe the MSP1000 is optimized for these qualities. Anyone know? >>

Anyone know a good question I can't answer.

One compromise in combining Palm functionality and a phone is batterry life.

I can carry a Palm Vx on the road for a couple of weeks. using frequently, before reinserting in the charging/synchronization cradle.

The Smartphone will offer 4.5 hours of talk time and 110 hours of standby time. Obviously talk time rapidly decreases standby time and if you happen to be in AMPS land (I hit this in Miami on Verizon recently) battery life allows maybe 1 hour talk time.

This is not fatal, carry a charger, but a compromise none the less.

Palm uses the Dragonball processor from MOT which they also use in their pagers. The MSM1000 has a separate ARM processor in it for doing things like WINCE and things. It is possible to do it wiht the processing power, but it is not code compatable with the Palm OS. The new Kyocera uses the MSM5000 and the separate dragonball processor. Just look at the Photos at the FCC page. It shows this clearly.
