Steve,

<< isn't that where the T (AWS)/BT hookup that has been bandied about this year would make some sense? >>

Amongst other things, Yes. Absolutely.

There are three two to many technologies in the world today (AMPS & IS-136 TDMA), IMO, and two too many Interim 3G Standards (TDMA-EDGE and GSM-EDGE). It is possible that the major equipment vendors that participate in 3GPP & 3GPP2 feel this way as well (including ERICY).

EDGE was supposed to be the bridge between the UWCC and GSMA when they allied closely last year (partially as a defensive maneuver to combat CDMA growth, IMO). Thinking may have changed as a result of recent developments.

People tend to throw around "multi-mode" handsets as a down and dirty solution to dealing with multiple technologies.

"multi-mode" handsets are not an easy down and dirty solution to things, given the permutations of technologies that exist in the world today.

TDMA-GSM-AMPS 800/900/1900 jobbies are well over due in the US for this reason, and this is the AWS/BT solution that AWS TDMA-SIM's are waiting for. Cingular entities are also waiting for these long overdue dudes.

These thingamabobs will arrive, but try to throw in an EDGE version and things really get complex.

I do not have a link, but I recall a ranking UWCC member making comments in print a few months ago about the degree of "interoperability" or lack of same that "multi-mode" handsets would achieve. If I find it, I will post back.
