Your statements imply that I-mode is GPRS related, perhaps specific, and that it will become antiquated with the rise of 3G/WCDMA. Am I correct in interpreting your words?

I-Mode is sort of the Japanese equivalent to WAP....it allows text/images to be displayed on a cell-phone size screen. I believe it uses something called Compact HTML to translate web pages to cell-phones. Like WAP, it is independent of the type of wireless techonology used (Docomo primarily uses PDC at 9.6kbps)....i-mode could be used on CDMA/GSM or TDMA networks if the operators wished to do so. Docomo will continue to use i-mode with W-CDMA. The investments that Docomo has made in overseas wireless carriers is to spread both i-mode as well as W-CDMA.

I think the reason that Tero believes i-mode could delay W-CDMA is the overwhelming success that Docomo has had with it. They have managed to create a data-centric service without the expense of 3G. This may lessen the urgency to implement W-CDMA for Docomo....
