Sounds poorly worded

Saying the company "warns for the 1Q" is a poor choice of words. I'd call it managing expectations. A true "warning" is a surprise to the street, i.e., LU, DELL, INTC and others this past quarter. ADC's 1Q earnings are typically lower than the previous 4Q. (see below). I think the company wanted to give itself room meet or beat expectations in what is typically its weakest quarter of the year, rather than miss raised estimates and have the stock get unfairly pounded. During this afternoon's conference call, the company was very confident in its ability to meet 2001 estimates and hinted that it could exceed them.

1998 4Q, $.09
1999 1Q, $.06
1999 4Q, $.10
2000 1Q, $.07
2000 4Q, $.18
2001 4Q est., $.12 (low), $.13 (mean), $.15 (high)
