About five years ago, the state of Florida decided upon a new motto. It
was: "Florida - The Rules Are Different Here."

Those of us who had lived here for some time found it a perfect
description of a state where corruption and ineptitude are hidden behind a
facade of beaches and palm trees. The motto was in fact so good it was
suddenly being quoted with great glee whenever the bizarre and silly
raised its head. That meant it passed the lips of Floridians with great
frequency.

Alas, too much truth was simply too much for the state. The motto was
dropped within six months. However, those of us who remember this gem
still use it to help newcomers better understand their frequent state of
bewilderment.

Traveling last week I was dumbfounded to find that my fellow Americans
questioned Florida’s behavior. Doesn't everyone take home ballots for the
night? Isn’t it routine for ballot boxes to turn up on beaches the morning
after the election? Does anyone really expect people to be able to count
twice and get consistent results?

In Florida we take these occurrences as the norm. Why is the rest of the
nation bewildered? The rules are different here. Now the rest of the
nation can appreciate the appropriateness of the motto.

Do you have any thoughts on why the attorneys for the SOS did not bring this to the attention of the Florida Supreme Court during the hearing???
