Greg, One thing I can tell you from my experience as a small businessman is, don't go head to head with them. Carry inventory that they don't. Offer a level of service that they don't. Specialize in something, advertise and promote that.

Would you rather have a 50% margin on 500K in revs or 20% on a million? I'd take the former, with the smaller employee base(and all of those problems) that goes with it.

I'm sorry to hear about the Borders opening. Its amazing in such a short time span they took a beautiful place and destroyed beyond even my fears. Remember when I was upset about the street lights ruining my view? Just what the area needed another borders. Where I live know about 20 minutes away they have a borders on one corner and across the street is a barnes & noble. So watch out.I do think that alot of these stores will have closings as they have over expanded with the economy slowing.. Alot of the homes around you will be up for sale pretty soon as the wealth will dry up. Maybe that is what caused Alan Greenspan to put on the brakes, he drove around and what he saw sickened him.

"a Borders opened last week practically on top of my store."

Ouch....I saw my little hometown in Michigan get "Los Angelized" just as I was leaving to go to college. You name the big low-end retailer (WMT, KMART) or fast food chain and they set up shop on the strip heading north out of town. You know the rest. The downtown imploded. Also...so did every small down town for 15 miles around. That commercial center sucked the local commercial life out of the whole area.

People vote with their wallets, though, you know? That's all part of the same mentality that has HALF of America fighting for Bush and HALF fighting for Gore. Right.....What's to fight over?

I just heard that Borders warned. What are you doing to steal their market share and profits? Hang in there, keep it up!
