Art - I have a theory that MIGHT be adding to the current market weakness: A lot of people took inordinate gains from the market last spring. They now owe a lot of tax on those gains. Some of the current selling could be due to those people selling losers to offset some of those gains. After all, if there are losses in an account, why not take advantage of them. Today was the last day of the year to sell losers that you'd want to buy back before Jan. 1, in order to take advantage of the supposed "January effect". I know, people can still sell for a loss for another month, but if they do, they might pay a lot more to buy back after Jan. 1 -- and then again . . . maybe not, if the election doesn't get settled. Wow! What a mess!
