"Many markets stabilize in a state we call "bowling alley forever." These markets never transform from niche to mass, but just continue along a a series of niches. This is the pattern that has characterized specialized niche companies like mapInfo . . . Applied Materials . . . and Autodesk . . . Such companies can continue to grow for only so long if they never enter into a true mass market. Sooner or later, they run out of new niches. After that they settle down onto Main Street, typically with good margins, good service revenues, but nothing like gorilla-game market valuations."

Apple is not a gorilla, even by your definition, because the Mac platform is a niche market.
