Greg,

That is indeed good advice.

I have some old family friends that own a local hardware store which has quite a bit of "color" and history. It is a small store, the parking lot is frequently jammed on weekends. Several years ago a HomeQuarters opened up about a block away and there was a lot of talk as to whether family owned store would survive. Well, it did. Nicely.

What was ironic is that Home Depot built a store even closer (practically next door) and put the HomeQuarters out of business.<gg> There is a steady stream of customers that are always being referred to the small hardware store because they carry a variety of items that the HD doesn't.

By not competing head to head with the mega stores, and honing in on their niche, the mega store attracted more traffic for the small, family owned operation. They now have a much larger customer base that extends beyond their local geographical area, probably would not have happened but for the new "competition".
