Colton Gang, Alterman's perspective was extremely well-written and very much to the point. Maybe more folks participating on this thread should read The Nation.

I happen to be a voter who didn't vote for Gore, but I believe he holds the moral high ground in the current Flordian debacle.

Although this has been difficult and has spawned great anger among otherwise friendly folk, I think one of the most important consequences which will come from this is a marked improvement in our voting systems.

For example, why should poor folk who live in the more populace communities whose precincts, due to budget constraints, use the antiquated Votomatic voting machines have their vote count become destructive due to the inadequacy of the vote counting machinery?

I recall seeing on television--I forget which network--a colored map showing where the Votomatic and other kinds of voting machines were used. Given the experience we're learning from the three Florida counties, I'm led to believe Gore actually got tens of thousands--if not a million or more--of votes nationwide which didn't get counted due to the Votomatic machines prevalent in poorer communities that ordinarily vote for Democrats.

I'd certainly like to know the writer's official definition of "manipulation" re the Seminole County issue. Additionally, I would remind the author that the documents are "applications" for ballots, NOT ballots.
