Clinton's economic programs are finally kicking in:

U.S. Economic Growth Slowest in Four Years

Nov 29 8:41am ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. economy grew at its slowest pace in four years during the third quarter, the government said on Wednesday as it revised down an earlier estimate to reflect a worsening trade picture and less production than thought for inventories.

The Commerce Department said gross domestic product -- the broadest measure of total output within U.S. borders -- advanced at an annual rate of 2.4 percent during the July-September quarter, down from 2.7 percent estimated a month ago. It was less than half the second quarter's growth rate of 5.6 percent and was the weakest for any quarter since the third quarter of 1996, when GDP increased 2 percent.

While consumer spending held up, the department said imports were higher than it estimated a month ago and exports were less vibrant, while spending on computers and software was lower than it had previously calculated. Also, businesses added to inventories at a slower $73.5-billion-a-year rate instead of $79.9 billion during the third quarter, further shaving from the rate of GDP advance.
