CC, I actually think Dubya is a pretty nice guy and not nearly as dopey as most think. However, I believe his political thinking, at least domestically, is controlled by major corporations who don't care about the citizenry except as low cost labor and brain dead consumers. (though I totally agree with him about guns and capital punishment. But Gore is also in favor of capital punishment. I do think it needs to be improved so that the well-connected criminals receive the penalty as often as the poor, but that may be Utopia) In foreign policy, I am probably much closer to Dubya than to Gore.

CCCrawford,

I saw the (VBG).

But I believe that many people confuse economic beliefs with having a heart.

There is a tendency among people on the left to assume that making economic decisions that are harsh on some in the short term is an indication of a lack of compassion or heart.

In many cases "free market types" simply believe there is a long benefit to the whole that far outweighs the short term pain to some.

Granted the long term plus side may not benefit all equally, but it almost always includes enough for the majority of those that were on the short end of the stick early on to make economic sense.

I come across many extremely bright people on the left that believe they are on the high moral ground because of their compassion. But they often are clueless about how much damage their cmpassion would do to the system if implemented.
