Book value is meaningless no matter what a lot of the time, as you well know.

Even when book value has value, you need to look at tangible book value, not book value. For example, even though LU has $26 billion in book value, more than $18 billion of that is intangible.

Of the companies you cite, I would consider AXP's book value the most relevant, and XOM's book value the least relevant.
