MADRID, Nov 28 (Reuters) - The mobile arm of Spanish telecoms group Telefonica said on Tuesday it had awarded the first phase of construction contracts for its next generation UMTS mobile network to Nokia , Ericsson and Motorola Inc. (NYSE:MOT - news) .

Telefonica Moviles -- which is seeking to build a mobile empire across Europe and has just floated on the bourse -- said it would spend about 20 billion pesetas ($103 million) to build the network in Spain's 16 biggest cities.

The three telecoms equipment companies are due to install 750 base stations in cities with more than 250,000 inhabitants by August next year.
