AFTER THE BELL-Tech shares plunge on Altera, Gateway
NEW YORK, Nov 29 (Reuters) - U.S. technology shares fell sharply in extended trading on Wednesday after two industry leaders, Altera Corp. (NasdaqNM:ALTR - news) and Gateway Inc. (NYSE:GTW - news) warned of slowing sales in the fourth quarter.

Gateway's and Altera's warning confirmed the worst fears of investors that the slowing U.S. economy is hurting the market's former high-fliers. The technology-laden hit Nasdaq Composite Index (^IXIC - news) hit new year-lows in regular trading.

Gateway shares last traded on Instinet at $21-1/2, down from a regular close of $29.50. Altera traded below $20, after closing at $25-15/16. Xilinx Inc. (NasdaqNM:XLNX - news) fell to $37-3/8, from a close of $43. Intel Corp. (NasdaqNM:INTC - news) dropped to $39-1/4, from a close of $42-3/4.
