I just had a chat with the cashier at the local ABC (state-run liquor store). He is African, has an English accent so I guess he is from Nigeria although I never asked. He is not naturalized, but has a green card, and his daughter is a citizen and voted in this last election (for Gore). I like to talk politics with him because he keeps up with it, and also he reads books about it, so he's more interesting and insightful than your ordinary cashier (I guess that's stereotyping.) He is very upset about the votes not being counted, but convinced that the Supreme Court will give the election to Bush. He sort of agreed with me that dimpled votes shouldn't be counted, but questioned me very sharply on how the dimples got there in the first place. He argued that maybe a few dimples could have been put on the card by running it through the machine or by mishandling, but not thousands. Smart guy. -g- Finally, I told him that a judge was considering the matter now and that the judge was a Democrat and that made him happy. He won't be very happy if the Florida Legislature steps in and appoints a slate of Republican Electors and then Jeb Bush signs it. He already thinks there is something that smells about Florida being the only state with problems. As it says in the Bible, "He who sows the wind will reap the whirlwind." Or, as they say on the street, "What goes around, comes around." I still want the Florida Legislature to act if that's what it takes to avert the argument that Florida's Electoral votes don't matter and Gore wins by default, but that will be an impossible sell to the cashier, I fear.
