You raise an interesting question about the "typical yearly cycles". The market continues to teach me that when everyone expects the same thing to occur it becomes highly unlikely that it will. This year, conventional wisdom became clear that November to February/March would be a highly profitable time to be long; naturally, conventional wisdom was turned on its head.

Similarly, tax selling occurred earlier this year (early March) than before. Same reason.
