The cumulative total of PC sales in volume to date this year also increased by 61.4 percent from the same period of the previous year, and by 26.5 percent from the annual total of 1999, Nikkei Market Access reported. GfK Japan is an information service company dealing with POS data from 2,000 large-scale retailers of home electrical appliances. In October 2000, when machines installed with Windows Me (Millennium Edition) came onto the market, PC sales turned to increase for the first time in three months. Among all types of systems, notebook PCs were buoyant. Behind the success, price differences between notebooks and desktops are becoming smaller, giving the impression that notebooks are relatively cheap. The average selling price of notebook PCs in October 2000 remained in the 200,000 yen range, as it was the previous month. But that of desktops has decreased by more than 11,000 yen since September. The price difference between notebooks and desktops was 71,759 yen in April, 54,821 yen in August, and it is currently 38,504 yen. (110.97 yen = US$1) An all-in-one machine with a 14.1-inch TFT-LCD is priced at less than 200,000 yen at present. Even a top-selling notebook PC with a Pentium III microprocessor, a CD-RW drive, and DVD-ROM drive can be purchased somewhere close to 200,000 yen. (Nikkei Market Access)
