No, not from Argentina... [which in a way gives more credence to my statement that their food is very good] -g-

I spent 2.5 weeks in Buenos Aires (BA) and it was a great pleasure. Their mainly Italian and Spanish ancestry have given them great gusto for food which is an important part of ANY Latin person.

While their main preference for beef lies in the great "Estancias" they used to have, (the equivalent to a huge Ranch), they manage to also have some great fish. One of them is a South Atlantic fish called "Merluza Negra" (the translation I was given was "Black Hawke" --and they assured me that the spelling was correct), I had the Merluza at a Spanish restaurant while in BA. The consistency of the meat is similar to Sea Bass. They also call it Patagonian Toothfish.

They are also known by 'mate' (which is a bitter tea) made famous by the gaucho (or Argentinean cow-boy) --legend says the Gaucho actually originated in Uruguay-- I am NOT an authority on the subject.

Mate also means the gourd (as a container), where the tea is kept and drunk from. You put the 'yerba mate' leaves inside and add hot water, obviously the first sips will be stronger (and quite bitter) --I did not have the oportunity to drink it as it appears that the container is a "personal" item.
